About Anuradha Paudwal
Indian playback singer Anuradha Paudwal is well known for her work in Bollywood. After Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhonsle, she ranked among the top playback singers. Her career in Hindi playback was marked by a succession of successes, which challenged the Mangeshkar monopoly.
Xavier’s College is where she studied in Mumbai (Bombay). As part of his marriage, Arun Paudwal worked with music director S.D. In 1973, Anuradha sang a melodious “shloka” in the film Abhimaan, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bachchan. The following year she made her Marathi film debut with Yashoda (music by Datta Davjekar). It became popular when she released a record of non-film Marathi songs, called “bhav geeten” in 1974.
Her Playback Career
The Hindi film Kalicharan (starring Shatrugan Sinha and Reena Roy) gave her her first break as a playback singer. Hema Malini and Shashi Kapoor starred in her first solo performance, Aap Beeti. This movie was composed by the music-composer duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal. In addition to singing songs for several composers such as Rajesh Roshan (Des Pardes), Jaidev (Dooriyan, Laila Majnu), Kalyanji-Anandji (Kalaakar, Vidhataa), and Usha Khanna (Souten, Sajan Bina Suhagan), she also composed music for many plays.
There are several Marathi movies on which Anuradha sings, including “Disate Majalaa” (Ashtavinayak), “Raja Lalakaari”, and “Kaalyaa Maatita Maatita”. Music for most of these movies was provided by the duo Anil-Arun, her husband Arun collaborating with Anil Mohile.
It appears that Anuradha has never been trained in classical music, as she stated in an interview: “I haven’t been trained in classical music. I have tried it many times, but it has never worked out. I learned a little here and there, but ultimately, I just practiced for many hours listening to Lataji.”
The popular numbers Anuradha performed for the movie Hero were composed by Laxmikant and Pyarelal. In addition to “Meri Jung” (O mere Kwabon ke), “Batwara” (Thaare Vaaste Re Dola-Tu maro kaun lage), “Nagina” and others, she collaborated with Laxmikant Pyarelal on a number of songs. During the filming of “Ram Lakhan,” Laxmikant Pyarelal gave Anuradha three major hits. They ended their association with “Tezaab”, in which she sang two good songs: “Kehdo ki tum” and “Hum tumko Dilbar Kyon mane.”.
In the following years, she collaborated with movie producer Gulshan Kumar and had many successful films including Lal Dupatta Malmal Ka, Tezaab, Aashiqui, and Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin. Kumar Sanu, Udit Narayan, Abhijeet, Sonu Nigam, and others became known thanks to her and Gulshan Kumar. Arun Paudwal, her husband, was among the new music directors introduced to the music industry. T-Seris (Gulshan Kumar’s music label) brought together Nadeem-Shravan, Anu Malik, Nikhil Vinay, and Amar Utpal to start a new era of Bollywood melody. Anuradha sang duets also with her co-singers from the south, namely S.P. Balasubrahmanyan and K.J. Balasubrahmanyan.
At the height of her fame, Anuradha announced that she would join the “T-series” exclusively and focus on devotionals and cover versions. Numerous Bhajan and promotional videos were produced by T-Series using her attractive and pleasing looks.
It was the first time a female playback singer was featured on more music covers than the film’s actors. After some time with T-Series, she took a sabbatical. She resumed her playback career about five years later. Her comeback was mildly received by her old music directors even though she sang a few hit songs for them.
The devotional songs she sings and the devotional albums she creates remain Anuradha’s forte despite her significant reduction in singing for films.
