My mind runs away to you
With the thought I hope you’ll see
Can’t see where it’s wandered to
But I know where it wants to be
I’m waiting patiently though time is moving slow
I have one vacancy and I wanted you to know that
You’re the one designed for me
A distant stranger that I will complete
I know you’re out there we’re meant to be
So keep your head up and make it to me
And make it to me
So sick of this lonely air
It seems such a waste of breath
So much that I need to say
So much to get off my chest
I’m waiting patiently though time is moving slow
I have one vacancy and I wanted you to know that
You’re the one designed for me
A distant stranger that I will complete
I know you’re out there we’re meant to be
So keep your head up and make it to me
Make it to me
About Sam Smith
The British soul singer Sam Smith was born on May 19, 1992, in London, England, with a mellifluous voice and a delivery that lent itself to complex lyrics that questioned the notions of romantic love that had become the standard in popular soul music.
Born to a truck driver and a greengrocer father and a banker mother, Smith grew up in Cambridgeshire. His father was a truck driver and a greengrocer and his mother was a banker. Having been impressed by Smith’s rendition of Whitney Houston’s “My Love Is Your Love” at a young age, both parents encouraged him to sing from an early age. In addition to pursuing vocal training, Smith soon appeared in local theatre productions as well as with Youth Music Theatre UK, working with six different managers before eventually moving to London at the age of 18 in order to pursue opportunities there.
Career and success
It was Smith’s collaboration with the House duo Disclosure on the track “Latch” that gave Smith his first big break as his liquid falsetto vocals were accompanied by an effervescent electronic beat which gave Smith his first big break in music. In 2012, this recording was released and it quickly became a hit around the world. Smith was able to land a record deal as a result of the collaboration. In the Lonely Hour, Smith’s debut album, was released early in 2013 and the first single from the album was “Lay Me Down,” which was the singer’s first single. A track by producer Naughty Boy featuring Smith’s vocals, “La La La” (2013), was also featured on Smith’s debut album. Following the 2014 release of In the Lonely Hour, the single “Stay with Me” became a radio staple as it wistfully pleaded for a one-night stand with affection in its keening falsetto prior to becoming one of the biggest hits of the year. It is believed that Smith was influenced by singers such as Whitney Houston and Aretha Franklin, whose powerful, soaring voices propelled their voices to the high end of their registers as they conveyed the emotions of loss and love. It was these themes that defined In the Lonely Hour, which was written by Smith in the aftermath of a rejection he had received from a heterosexual man because of his sexual orientation.
In spite of her young age, the young vocalist has steadily accrued accolades for her dulcet vocals, which have been compared to crooners that range from Frank Sinatra to Adele. As part of the 2015 Grammys, In the Lonely Hour won the Grammy for best pop vocal album, and “Stay with Me” won the Grammy for record of the year and song of the year. There is no doubt that Smith is one of the most promising new artists.
As soon as the singer revealed in early 2015 that she had settled out of court with Tom Petty over similarities between “Stay with Me” and “I Won’t Back Down,” the rocker expressed goodwill toward the singer and praised the rapid resolution of the issue. During the course of 2015 Smith also sang a song called “Writing’s on the Wall” for the James Bond film Spectre, a song he co-wrote with Jimmy Napes. The duo went on to win an Academy Award for the song. During his acceptance speech, Smith made a mistake by misquoting an interview he conducted with actor Ian McKellen, implying that Smith was the first openly gay man to win the Oscar. After the gaffe was made, the singer apologized for the mistake and took a short break from the limelight to recover. In late 2017, Smith released his second studio album, The Thrill of It All, which was well received by both critics and fans alike.
Smith’s song “Him,” which pleaded for a man’s acceptance of his love, was particularly praised. This year, Smith announced the fact that she has a nonbinary identity, and she tweeted that her pronouns are they/them.
